What is Self Awareness?
When there is no self-awareness, the mind is in constant conflict with various dominating influences that bombard it in daily life.
When you are not self-aware, the result is a continuous mental conflict and confusion between the different fragments of the mind.
A self-deluded person doesn’t clearly know what to do and which journey in life is worth giving time and energy, lacking inner conviction and integrity.
Mental haziness, mood swings, and emotional outbursts become the default state of mind for an individual who lacks self-awareness.
When you don’t operate from a center of authentic knowing and understanding, you are always in inner self-doubt on what to do and what not to do in life.
Until we have that sharp inner clarity on what’s going on in my mind and self-observe our contradictory identities, whatever we do cannot give us lasting satisfaction and higher happiness.
Hence wisdom philosopher Loa Tzu quotes, ‘ at the center of your being you have the answer. You know who you are, and you know what you want.’
Only when we are self-aware and attentive to life in front of us will our life be fulfilling and joyful.
What does it mean to be aware of the Self?
An unaware person is a highly influenced being who doesn’t quite know the root of their desires and actions and hence remains deeply unhappy.
Mind by design is always restless, hollow, and highly unreliable with random mood swings; hence, it is not totally at peace and relaxed anywhere, with anything and anybody.
Hence the mind always feels the grass is greener on the other side.
The present moment never satisfies us, and the internal tug of war continues, which we call the daily struggles of living.
The root cause of all human misery, dissatisfaction, and other existential suffering is that we are profoundly unaware of who we are and what we want.
If we can self-observe, we can see how we feel hopeful that the next job, the next relationship, the next achievement, and the next desire will give us deep satisfaction and an infinite feel-good factor.
But if we can be attentive enough to see the facts of our daily reality, we will realize, despite the innumerable hopes, prayers, and desires, that nothing truly and deeply satisfies us.
Whatever we desire and achieve never satisfies the inner loneliness nor puts the mind at rest.
We only think and hope the future will somehow deliver happiness without sharply investigating how these past years have repeatedly been deceiving.
To be self-aware is to go deeper and deeper into this question of Who Am I? not as a casual spiritual seeker but because one is genuinely unable to find true happiness in life and is burning from within after repeated disappointments and frustrations.
Hence, one embarks on the authentic self-journey of I want to know and understand the facts of myself. That is self-awareness.
The inner urge to know, understand and get clarity because it is my life, and I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with suffering, sadness, misery, and heartache.
What is Self Awareness in one line?
Self-awareness is the journey of the mind moving from ignorance to intelligence, from being restless to feel at home, from being doubtful and insecure toward better inner clarity and relaxation within.
The ancient wisdom literature – The Sarvasar Upanishad, teaches us through numerous profound verses that the inner intelligence that erupts from self-awareness is the highest joy possible.
Self Awareness enables us to authentically see the false as false, which earlier looked true and real is the beginning of life in freedom and mental peace.
This inner intelligence is our deepest nature. Intelligence presents itself when we want to really understand and show a serious inclination to be attentive to life facts without bringing personal assumptions.
All our rigid ideas, dogmas, preconceived notions, and misplaced values that we have borrowed from the world are the layers of haziness that cover our deep intelligence.
Stop identifying with these layers, let the love to know and understand overpower these redundant masks, then a beautiful life in deep self-awareness becomes a possibility.
