When faced with a problem, feeling negative and stressed out is a default state of our minds. Therefore, it is very effortless to think negatively.
Tell me, what comes more naturally to us? To worry or not to worry?
But to really live positively and look at things optimistically is a work of diligence and discipline.
We cannot be positive all of a sudden. We need to live life in a way that is in harmony with an optimistic state of mind.
Is Optimism an emotion?
Optimism is a quality of mind that lives in faith.
Without getting heartbroken quickly, such a mind looks and understands all the happenings, obstacles, challenges, and ever-changing life situations.
An optimistic mind doesn’t feel that everything is at stake and is not internally very insecure. On the contrary, a timid mind keeps a high stake on people (emotional attachment) and assets (material attachment), and their life goes for a toss when life snatches those attachments.
Optimism means coping with unexpected situations. Pessimism means collapsing to unfavorable situations as there is no inner mental integrity.
Let the word ‘optimism’ not just be a concept or a fad motivational booster, but be a way of living in real life.
Develop both inner strength and mental clarity regarding who we are, what love is, what companionship is, the role of money and prestige in work, and so on.
The better the inner understanding, the better will be the quality of life devoid of easy negativity.
Understand this deeply, to be really optimistic is to have an inner core, a steel heart that will remain unchanged even if life snatches everything away.
A person of wisdom knows that life is nothing but fleeting moments in time; what comes in this world will have to go eventually; clinging to it more than necessary and hoping for infinite security will only lead us to more despair and sadness.
Hence be grateful for all that we have and see how being constantly dissatisfied stops us from living freely at this ‘very moment.’
Why is Optimism important?
Maria Robinson quotes beautifully on why being positive is such a game-changer.
She says, ‘nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.’
Being optimistic saves you from repeating mistakes and helps you live life in a little nicer way than yesterday.
Imagine the state of the psyche that is always self victimizing, blaming, nagging, and whining on every next petty thing. What a hellish mind it would be?
Anybody can own that individual and make that individual feel bad and hurt. A spineless, loveless, and self-hating individual will be so.
On the other hand, looking at amazing personalities like Hellen Keller (an illness in 19 months made her deaf and blind) yet see the quality of her life, achievements, and how she looked at herself and was a light bringer to millions of people.
That’s what optimism does to an individual.
She could have committed suicide in self-pity or withdrawn from the world and confined in her home owing to her defects, yet she lived like a queen in freedom and joy.
Hellen Keller was the perfect example of Elbert Hubbard’s statement, ‘ A positive anything is better than a negative nothing.’
But why do we find less optimistic people but more negative people everywhere, including you and me?
Because our egos find a certain pleasure in remaining in self-pity, blaming one’s own fate and destiny, and keep feeling low and moody.
All such inner hollowness doesn’t allow us to change for good. Because changing the attitude of oneself requires effort and responsibility towards oneself.
Hence, nobody wants to do that and keep blaming the external factors: God, the governments, and the world for their miseries.
Stop living that way. It will only make our lives more and more hellish.
Also, do not read these realistic optimism quotes as temporary pain killers, and then once things are favorable, back to the same mistakes and careless living.
